‘The Bursary’ is a Zulu/English language feature film that explores the culture of maiden bursaries and virginity testing through the eyes of a young Zulu woman called Khethiwe.
When Khethiwe, a recipient of a maiden bursary, is sexually assaulted she is faced with a difficult decision. Does she stay silent, allowing her attacker to walk free, or does she say something, exposing that she is no longer a virgin and thus disqualifying herself for the bursary?
She remains silent but pressure starts to rise when another girl is assaulted by her attacker, forcing her to chose between her own preservation and that of her community.
Written by Nomawonga Khumalo and Brett Michael Innes, the screenplay was shortlisted for the 2019 Sundance Development Lab and is one of the projects that has been selected for the 2019 Durban FilmMart. The film marks Nomawonga’s directing debut and will be produced by Innes.
